Gibraltar: Defense from Within

The Summer 2013 Voyage has finally come full circle. After sailing around the Mediterranean Sea, the MV Explorer is face to face with the great Rock of Gibraltar, once again. This ancient Pillar of Hercules is the most impressive sight upon entering the Mediterranean Sea and is regarded as one of the greatest military strongholds of all time.

Size was not the only key to defending the Rock of Gibraltar. Since gaining control of the rock, British forces have defended the territory for centuries from the inside using numerous vantage points and by excavating an intricate tunneling system used during the Great Siege of Gibraltar and WWII.

Semester at Sea students and staff recently had the opportunity to go on an exclusive tour of the rock from the inside-out. Watch the video above and learn about the secrets they uncovered.
