Overview of Course

Introduction to the Architecture and Urban Planning of Europe, Africa, and Asia

On our “European, African, and Asian Adventure” from Belgium to Thailand, we will encounter a vast array of architectural styles and urban environments, such as the Catalan modernism of Barcelona, the Classical Greek architecture of Athens, the Victorian Gothic buildings of Mumbai, and the skyscrapers of Ho Chi Minh City, to name but a few. This course will focus on the major buildings and monuments, and on the development and growth of selected cities, on our itinerary. We will pay particular attention to how stylistic tradition, function, patronage, and ideology, among other factors, affects architecture and urban planning. Upon returning home, it is hoped that you will be able to apply what you have learned to your own built-environment and to those that you subsequently visit.
